The Google Expedition

Yesterday Pt England School had a Google Expedition. In this expedition there were little cardboard goggles called Google Cardboard. They are like I said, little cardboard goggles. They’re not much, but when you add a phone to it(and the right app), things become a little more interesting. You can visit exotic lands. You can even go underwater, or if you’d like, go into space! So, let me take you on a journey through the world that we live on.

First up the Borneo rainforest. We weren't exactly in the midst of the rainforest, but we were in a cave underneath it. There were other rock climbers down here with us. It was a full 3D experience! We couldn’t move around though but who cares, it was the bom! To my surprise when I looked to the right I saw a figure with a familiar face. I’ve got it! The man that I saw was David Attenborough. He is a Scientist and a very famous narrator on documentaries.

Image result for google cardboardMy favorite place we went to was the ocean. When we were there, there were Bull sharks, fish, and other fellow scuba divers. An interesting fact about Bull sharks, is they’re more aggressive than Great White’s. Also they are able to swim in fresh water! Which is an interesting fact but not good for us! But in another part of the ocean where we visited there were cool but a little scary Whale sharks. They are huge! Whale sharks can be as long as 20 metres! But wait that’s not it. They can also weigh up to 20 tons! Now I don’t know about you but I would not like it if one of those whale sharks sat on me. I’d be jelly in seconds!

Anyway, those goggles were pretty fun and, I rather enjoyed looking at others zooming around on the carpet with other Google cardboard pieces and enjoying themselves far too much. But the experience was amazing. I’d like to thank Google and the creators, David Coz & Damien Henry for the experience. The rest of Pt England would agree with me we loved it!

Writing Test (Edited)

Two days ago I thought it would be an exactly normal day when out of nowhere on the timetable it showed that there was a change. “Fun Time”, I was confused, I had no idea what fun time was or what it meant. Anyway, later on in the day I was getting some idea’s about what “Fun Time” was. From teachers, to students, to other random people. It was a full rotation of fun things.

I looked at the rotations. There were brain busters, Fear Factor and three more activities that I haven’t mentioned! Today was going to be a fun filled day. We were split up into groups, so when we travel from station to station there will not be traffic jams and stuff like that. Some people I saw were disappointed and I asked them why. The most popular answer was, “I’m to tired and I don’t feel like running”. Well that’s a shame because when the teachers said fun time they meant amazing race!

As I said before there were activities like brain busters, well that particular game was the favorite game of them all. To some people it wasn't so great because all you had to do was answer 5 questions on a piece of paper. But I found it awesome because these five questions looked interesting & also were very challenging. One of them were, “What is something ancient that we use today to help you see through walls”. Someone in the same group as me answered X-ray vision. But hold on, that’s not ancient, It’s not even in the present time. Who knows if it’ll be in the future. After a long time of thinking I realized something. I looked around the room for any clues to help me, and then looked through a window. Got it! A window, and to my surprise I was right. Yes, one question down, 4 to go. Sadly, we didn't figure out the other questions. At least we figured out one question. One is better than none.

My next favorite game was Photo Booth. In this event we had to take dashing photo’s of ourselves. But don’t worry there were costumes, so It wouldn't of been one of those boring photo’s. Where would we be without costumes? So getting ready wasn't that hard for someone who wears costumes all the time at home. I heard some people were shy. There is no need to be shy, especially around friends and family. There were specific poses we had to take like, a straight face pose, funny pose, normal smiley pose and a made up pose. The best one for me was the made up pose. Our team was going crazy, no shyness their. After that I was totally exhausted. We were running from place to place and man I can’t believe I kept up with the group.

Finally after all the fun, it was time to stop and cool down back at class. But also to get our energy back up for the run that happened soon after. On the way back I could smell something that almost made me puke. I know what it was, it was the fear factor. They had to eat dry Weetbix which I can handle. But there was something else I could smell. That’s right it was the fruit salad mixed with spaghetti, Gross. Anyway today was awesome besides that revolting smell. So I was right Tuesday was a fun filled day.

History of Superman

These are the answers to some questions on our site. It is about how Superman changed. We are learning about adaptation this term, which is why we are doing this. Did you know that Superman used to be a bald telepathic villain bent on taking over the world?

Answers to the questions on our site - Jordan S, Jordan A, Promise, Iisa

Man of steel...red underwear or blue underwear?
He originally wore red underpants, but it changed to blue, and in the Man Of Steel movie, he had no underpants.

Why did it change?
He changed his underwear colour because it looked sleek, cooler, and it fitted the changing fashion.

Krypton - what is it?
Krypton the planet where Superman comes from.

Why was it important to Superman?
Krypton is important to superman because it is his home planet.

What part did Superman's parents have in his survival?
His parents made the choice to send superman to earth in order for him to survive. They died doing this.

Original powers?
He could jump one mile, He had super strength and had super speed.

Did he fly in the beginning?
He could not fly in the beginning, he could only jump around a mile.

What changed in term of his super powers?
Instead of jumping he could fly, Superman now has laser eyes. He also has X-ray vision.

Daily planet - his workplace...how does he adapt between his human workplace and being a superhero?
He has glasses when he is in his workplace and when he is a superhero he has no glasses and he has rubble costumes.

Addition Presentation Decimals

Finally something different to a think board, still maths I know but think boards were not that interesting after 10 million posts of the same thing. The point in this presentation is to learn how many numbers you add and when you add them.

Thinkboards with decimals

This is yet another one of my think boards. This particular think board is practice for the exams that are coming up soon. It's about decimal addition, the main key to think boards is the way you work out the problem, Hence the name think boards.

My Think board Master

This think board is based around algebra. Today I've learnt about how to put a question into a word problem. Please comment and I'd like advice on how to make my blog post better... please.

Ratios and Proportions

This presentation is about ratios and proportions. A way to write a ratio is say there are 80 birds on a lake, 37 were swans and 43 were ducks. What is the ratio of the swans to ducks... Tell me the answer in the comment.

Tuesday 11 August 2015

Ratio Practice

This maths presentation is about ratios. Miss Clark is getting us used to ratios and how they work. I've learnt to look at the whole question and learnt that I have to look at what's around me and find new ways of solving the problem.

Is it Really Fair

This presentation is about chocolate obviously. But it's also about the kids especially in Africa. It's about how the chocolate is made and who makes it. It's normally kids from the age of about 7-14 years old. They are being trafficked across the border to the Ivory coast to make chocolate for us.

Tiritiri Matangi Island (Reflection) Design

After coming back from Tiritiri matangi island the year 7 & 8 extension group had to create a design made up from our own imaginations. I thought of two designs, a speaker and a rodent trap. The speaker was for the Tuatara, New Zealand's native dinosaur. It is endangered and needs the help of a few sea birds.

The speaker will help with bringing the sea birds to Tiritiri Matangi island and that will also help re-populate the Tuatara species. The rodent trap will help by making sure the rats and all of those pests stay far away from the tuatara. So hopefully with the help of D.O.C these designs of mine can work and D.O.C could definitely help make it a reality.

Tiritiri Matangi Island 3D Design

After Going to Tiritiri Matangi Island the year 7 & 8 extension group had to come up with a design to help improve an endangered species. This took me a little while to present and hopefully my ideas will work.

Addition Thinkboard (Decimals)

This thinkboard is to do with decimals. If you don't know what decimals are then I'll give you a quick lesson. Decimals is the point in the number that separates the whole numbers from the decimal numbers. Decimal numbers aren't whole numbers, but when you add them together they can become whole numbers. They have weird names like tenths, hundredths, that kind of stuff. As you can possibly see is instead of just ten it's tenth. Hope you learnt something new when you looked at the thinkboard, thank you.

Addition Triangle

I honestly can't remember how many of these I've done. What I've learnt is to know the place value of each number.

Rock Climbing In The Holidays

The equipment you shall need is:
  • Harness
  • Carabiner
  • Rock Climbing wall
The things attached to the rock climbing wall is:
  • Automatic belay
  • Rocks
  • Plastic
  • Cable

The place was pretty cool, the place that we went to was Rock Climbing! It wasn't very big, but it was big enough for me, Toby and about another 3 or 4 people. When we got to the Rock climbing we weren't sure if we wanted to go. But when a man (me) of great courage stood up and said he wanted to do it my brother Toby decided he wanted to do it as well. We already knew how to climb rocks but we needed reminding just to confirm our confidence. After reprocessing the rules into my brain over and over again I was finally ready to do some climbing.

The first rock climbing wall I did was the easiest out of them all. Whenever I’d look over my shoulder at Toby I’d see him trying his hardest to get to the top. Sometimes he would get to the top and sometimes he wouldn't. There was one challenge that killed me. It tested my strength, I did it but after then the others I did wasn't easy. One Rock Wall I helped Toby getting up the whole way. I was next to him on a different wall having fun with him. My mother and I were so proud of him and his achievement and so was Toby.

There was one wall where you don’t use your hands you use these tiny poles and put them in holes on the wall. That’s how you climb up the wall it’s not easy especially when the poles don’t grip into the wall easily. On another wall you time yourself on how fast you can get up the wall. I was extremely proud of myself when I got 18.65 seconds. That’s really fast for me. Then is was time to go home, thanks to mum me and Toby got a drink afterwards and had some chocolate eclairs. Then after a bite I said, “Thanks mum these are the best”.

Here is a link to the Rock Climbing site if you'd like to go there.

Mt Ruapehu Part 1

These holidays I’m going to a mountain. But not just any mountain, I'm going to a mountain with SNOW on it, and that means I’ll be snowboarding on the mountain. Well if you haven't already been to the mountain of snow before then let me entertain you while I tell you about my fun time with my family. There are 6 in our family, Mum and Dad, four sons and no daughters. Just to let you know we were not on the mountain the whole time. The thing about my mum and dad is if there is not a spa at the bach we’re staying at, we will not rent that bach.

It always starts off with us at home packing our bags, both the night before and the day that we leave. It takes us a little while to get down to Ruapehu. The town we stayed in was Ohakune, which is only about 30 minutes from the actual mountain. If you were wondering how long it takes to get from our home in Auckland to Ohakune, the answer is approximately 5 hours.

The house was pretty cool. After setting up camp at the bach we didn’t really do anything except say our prayers and go to sleep. The next morning we got our season passes for the snowboarding and played in the snow for about an hour, then drove home went for a spa and watched a movie. Our family loves watching movies. We have over 300 of them? Sadly we only brought about 100 of them.
3rd day, time to hit the snow today. It was exciting, finally getting on the snow, I can’t wait to show my moves and snowboard. There are no skiers in this house! There are two sides to the mountain - one side’s called Turoa, the other side Whakapapa is where we are snowboarding on for today. It’s a blizzard on Whakapapa side. Toby the youngest of us all is snowboarding and the age of 7! So adults that means that anyone can try it.

The way that we all started learning how to snowboard is we would do something called Heels and Toes. It’s just turning and braking, the way you do that is you lean over your front knee, bend your knees, turn your hips and look where you want to go. Heels is when you’re on a snowboard looking down the mountain and you do all the stuff I told you and turn. When you do this you’ll then be facing down the mountain and on your heels, but you have to remember not to bend too far forward or to far back because you could fall. Toes is the exact opposite to heels. You start on heels and turn, when you’re on your toes you face up the mountain.

When we don’t go to the snow we either hang at home watching movies, play board games, go for a spa or we’re out of the house going shopping and looking around town. But what’s fun is the basketball court in town. I went there with my mum, and four brothers. “Beep” the finger whistle blew and the game had started. The teams were me, Toby and Mum, vs Noah and Levi. People were shooting goals, dribbling the ball, doing double dribbling, traveling and doing a lot of fouls. The crowd went wild (the players)! It was a fun game, the score was something : something, but what we do know is Levi and Noah won by a little (a bit).

One day some decided they didn’t feel like going to the Mountain. So we both went our separate ways. I was with the wise group, the group that stayed and went into town with mum and Toby. We were looking for something to do. We finally found the solution to our happiness.

The place was pretty cool, the place that we went to was…

I’ll have Part 2 in just a little while, but while you wait I might be able to come up with another blog for you about what I did and the fun I had doing it.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Trip (Reflection)

Last week on wednesday, I went to Tiritiri Matangi Island with the year 7 & 8 extension group. I learnt about some of the wildlife and more that is on the island, I also come to learn that the island started off as a bunch of trees and a lot of seabirds, but as time flew past people started using the island as farming land. Many years ago most of the trees were cut down and only 6% of it survived because the steep parts of the island’s mountain’s could be a hydroslide for  the cattle to roll down the hills and land in the water. But the farmers didn’t want that to happen so they marked the steep parts off with the trees. Now the island is 90% forested with trees and only 10% of the island has land.

A few things that I loved about the island was… 1st the open space, it was just lovely to smell nature all around and it was so cool to see the rivers and dams that were built over 50 years ago. 2nd the wild life, absolutely loved the wild life, I learnt about new birds on the island. There were some pretty cool birds on the island, some of them I’ve never heard of before now. Like the Saddleback, it is small and it’s not so good at flying but this bird can run. The reason why they are called the Saddleback is because of the saddle shaped color on their back.

What I learnt from the island is that we need to protect the endangered species by, throwing our rubbish in the bin especially plastic. By using less plastic especially Glad Wrap it kills the animals, that’s how most animals get sick and become endangered. I also learnt that the Takahe when they’re young they have brownish blackish beaks compared to the older ones who have red beaks. The way you tell who is the Takahe and who is the Pukeko is the Takahe is much fatter. Tiritiri Matangi was a really cool island, I just want to say a big thanks to D.O.C (Department of Conservation) for letting us come, and all of the volunteers for the fun. It was a great experience and I’d love to go back there again!

WW1 Mascots

This blog post is all about WW1 and the mascots that joined them. I've come to learn that animals were a huge help in the war because the pigeons helped with delivering the messeges, the donkeys helped with caring the water supply for the soldiers and the rest helped just as much.

The Exciting News

After Walter Dickson I was emailed that I made it into the 2nd trials for Walter Dickson! Sadly I can’t make it because I’m going down to a farm next friday and I am going to have an awesome time! But what exciting news, It startes with 80 people and gets cut down to 45 and then to 20 something and finally 22. I made it to the 45 people so that’s a huge thing for me. So that’s awesome and next year I might get the same chance hopefully!

Walter Dickson Trials

I’ve heard about it… I’ve learnt about it… but I haven’t seen it… until now! I’ve been invited to trial with Walter Dickson! It may sound like a joke, but it actually is the best rugby union team in Auckland. So it is a massive deal that I got invited to trial. There are only 80 people who have been chosen out of all of Auckland! It was on sunday.

After school had finished I rushed home to spread the news I just got. My mum was delighted and so was I for that day. But as the days passed so did my interest in the trials. The rain was not going away and I was afraid that I’d have to play in that freezing weather and my fingers don’t take numbness very well.

It’s sunday after church and honestly, I was tired, I was just not in the mood for playing rugby, it was horrible. But my mum and dad said, “If you don’t go then you’ll have to do the chores around the house with us”. That was my cue to leave, I would have rather played rugby than done chores for about an hour! So I packed my bag and Anth (dad) dropped me off and came and supported me with my brother Levi.

There are 6 games in the tournament. I played 4 of them. It was an amazing experience and I’d just like to say thank’s to my mum about making me lunch and a drink. At least when I got home I could just chill to a movie with butter chicken, mmm that was good.

I never had the chance to show you the letter (or part of it) so here it is. The letter wrote,

Wednesday 20th May 2015

Dear Parents

I have the pleasure in confirming that your child has been nominated by Pt England School to attend trials for Remuera zone Walter Dickson Representative rugby team.

The Walter Dickson tournament is a prestigious tournament between 8 zones throughout the Auckland region. It is limited to children in year 7 and 8 and they must weigh in less than 55kg’s on the day of the event. The tournament this year is during the July school holidays from 6th to 10th July and boys selected for the final squad will be required to be available for that whole week. The tournament is held at Teachers Eastern Rugby club at Okahu Bay in Orakei.

In addition to the tournament, the boys selected in the squad must be available for trainings (day & time to be confirmed) that will commence the week of from 1st June until the tournament in July…

That should be enough of the letter, because if I went on you would be to bored and I can’t let my readers get Bored! This is it for me today, Hope you didn’t fall asleep during this text. My punctuation hasn't been that great so could you help me by if anything sounds funny or is messed up the please comment below and tell me where it is and then correct it thank you!

Dear Jimmy,

Firstly may I say what an honour it was to learn of your time at war. How did you feel when you had blood coming out of your chest and your arm was hanging by the skin? Anyway I hope that you are all right. You were a very brave person and fought well in ww2. How did you feel when you thought that you’d never see your friend again?

Also how did you feel when you did see your friend again? I reckon that you would be pretty glad that the war was over. Your courage was really shown when  you left the group and fought all by yourself and still survived, now that’s some skill, not dieing in the middle of the battle field. You have showed us bravery and you have taught us all a lesson, to never give up even when times are tough.

Yours Sincerely,

Jordan

Alphabet Multiplication

This is my 4th alphabet multiplication! The concept is the same, you just times the letter by the next letter. For example, "Hi", H = 8 and I = 9 so 8 x 9 = 72. And that's your answer. So look at the equations and read through them, if I got any answer wrong then please correct me. Thanks again and look forward to my next blog post.

My Drawing

This holiday I had the chance to draw. I thought of many things to draw but realized how hard it would be to draw these things. No ideas were coming to my mind, I had nothing to draw. If you’re drawing then you know it would be a little hard to draw something when you don’t know what to draw. Then, I had a great idea of copying my Xbox game covers like, Lego Batman 2 and Minecraft. So using a pencil, paper, rubber and the Xbox covers I drew away.

After about 30 minutes of perfecting the art work I had finished. It looked pretty good I might add, my whole family, brothers, mum and dad all commented about it when they saw it. Most of them said, “WOW”. It did look amazing, I haven’t colored it in yet and probably never will. It was fun drawing, and the main thing I did was Control Z. Anyway look out for my next blog.

The Surprising Voyage

Last week on wednesday PT England School and another 12 schools in Manaiakalani came down to PT England Reserve to welcome in the two va’a Hokule’a and Hikianalia to our shores. We had to practice 1 haka, and 2 waiata. Setting up took a little while and after that we saw it. The va’a arrived and started to settle upon our beach. We went wild with our haka, we had to go through it about 6 times before the crew all got to the beach. There were a lot of people!

After they all had arrived we stopped singing, the crowd went dead silent. Then one of us stood out of the crowd and spoke. By the way my grandfather was at the beach when they came and he was the one who told Mr Burt (Principal of our school) about the meaning of Manaiakalani. After that, Hawai’i and the Hokule’a Crew found out about our cluster of schools and wanted to come along and find out about Manaiakalani.

Then when we finished the long speech we sang Nga Waka. Everyone was out of time but we kept going. Then there was this whole conversation and suddenly they started singing. They sang a really cool song and then there was the captain of the Hokule’a who stood out and started talking on and on. And finally when he finished they sang another song, then Mr Burt got up and closed it off by starting up a new thing. “People said it was impossible”, he started,”to do what we are about to do”. Then he showed us what we were going to do with a demo, after that I believe why people would say that.

We had to run down a long line of people and high five them, you think it’s easy, but when you have about 2000 kids it might get a little tricky don’t you think. Since I was a kapa haka leader and I was on the beach with the others already, we had to wait until all the schools had finished. It was not very exciting. So to make it exciting we high fived them as well, problem solvers!

When the high fiving was done and out of the way all the schools went back except for us kapa leaders. We got to stay and have a hangi, mmmmm. It was delicious. Then we learnt about the stars and where they start in the sky and leave in the sky, it was an external compass. A navigator navigated us through the compass and then he showed us how the compass was embedded into the va’a.

It was a real privilege, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I could go on and on with the words but I think I should stop. Thanks to all the parents and helpers for your help with transportation. Thank you Hokule’a and Hikianalia for willing to come to our beach it was an amazing experience!

A Flash Mob

Walking casually toward the table in the street acting like it was a perfectly normal day, discovering that it was Mrs Telea’s Birthday we were doing a dance and believe me you don’t have to be Samoan to do so. The music started and all of room 3 out of nowhere started dancing with the sound of choo - hoo. The street was rumbling with cheers and clapping.

Everyone got up to look at what was happening, because something attracted so much attention. We all formed a circle and Mrs Tele’a did a Samoan Siva and we were supporting her. She was the star and we were dancing around here.

Mr Wiseman thought that he could match Mrs Tele’a but to be honest he wasn't that good! She was beautiful, he was ugly, they both danced and then all the students got up and danced. Some were very shy and couldn't do it, others just wanted to let it out and dance. I didn't know how to dance Samoan but at least I tried.

Holiday Highlights

Going to Christchurch for a wedding
Going to Festival One
Going for a sleepover at my friend Ryan’s house

Highlights
In the holidays I had so much fun I've got three highlights. 1 Going to Christchurch for a wedding, because at the wedding I was in a flash mob. It was awesome I had so much fun learning the dance we did a mixture of hip hop and Samoan slap dance.

The second highlight was going to an amazing festival called Festival One. There were christian bands and a lot of food I had so much fun, we stayed up till 12:00 every night! Everyday was a new adventure with everything new.

During the holidays I had the privilege of going to a birthday sleepover. It was my friend Ryan’s B Day and We stayed up all night playing Xbox and watching movies. Believe me, the next day at my church service my head was like a ping pong ball going back and forth. I should’ve went to sleep!

Polyfest 2015 First Time For Everything

For the first time ever in the history of PT England School the red shirts piled onto the four buses and traveled to Polyfest. You probably would not have known but it is the 40th anniversary of Polyfest, that’s about as long as my parents have been on this earth for! One by one each student passed a security gate with huge guards and their muscular hands.

The grass was wet and walking on it was not that comfortable. For some reason we had to sit in lines which was bizarre, sitting on wet grass… we’re seniors man! Any who, we were on the grass yapping away when a man with a green shirt turned up and started talking about rotations or something. Also there was a very special visitor who came… it was Mr John Key! The crowd went wild, there were cheers and clapping everywhere. Film crews came in from different directions, there was 3 news, and funnily enough there was Chinese TV.

We had rotations where everyone would go from one obstacle to the other. After all the rotations were done we all got goody bags which had some cool stuff. We got to meet up with Flava and that was pretty cool! The Maori stage was awesome. One school in particular stood out for me, they has the coolest costumes and they used the Taiaha and Mere Pounamu, if you know what that is. Just before we left, a group of people did a haka tautoko to support them.

Over all I would like to thank the teachers and parents for their support in helping us. Because without them we would not be able to go to polyfest in the first place. They were very helpful and also the were very fun to hang out with. I can’t wait until Polyfest 2016!
